Football looks to build on positives

Newington fades in tough loss to Glastonbury

Newington looks to build off offensive explosion

If the Newington football team can look at the positives from Friday night’s showdown against Glastonbury, the Indians might actually be able to gain some momentum heading into next week’s game at Southington.

After all, Newington’s offense finally exploded. Jake Hedberg found his legs as the starting quarterback. Eric Ryan was impressive, and Newington put 28 points on Glastonbury in the first half alone.

Yes, there are some things to clean up. Newington’s defense, so tough in the first game of the season, couldn’t make big stops against a talented running back. The Indians need to play better defense next week against a Southington offense that scored 28 points on its own against New Britain’s highly-touted defense.

But the way the offense looked for at least a half Friday, there isn’t as much pressure on the defense as there once was. Newington can have confidence in the offense it expected to have lots of success this year. The Indians have done it now, and did it against a good team. With that success in its back pocket, the Indians have something to build on heading into next week and their remaining games.

Friday night ended poorly, but it was the beginning stages that will help Newington going forward.
