Ortiz a leader for Newington

Newington coach Eric Hennessy couldn’t praise Isaac Ortiz enough for the way he led the Indians this season, including moving to quarterback after Nick Guadarrama shocked the program and left before the season to attend a private school in Pennsylvania.

Ortiz moved from wide receiver to quarterback and played that position the first five weeks before Robert Sanchez was deemed ready to play and took over in a 27-7 win over Bristol Eastern last Friday night. Ortiz was able to not only move back to wide receiver, but play defense as well.

“Isaac stepped up and said, ‘You know what, I’ll carry this team for five weeks.’ It might not show in the win column, but a lot of teams would throw the towel in being 1-4 and Isaac kept this team together with his heart and soul,” Hennessy said after the game.

It’s that kind of unselfish leadership that builds future leaders, and Ortiz is well on his way already.
