Andrew Grenier NB Herald Athlete of the Week

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Congratulations to Andrew Grenier for being named the NB Herald Athlete of the Week!

Both the Newington football and Goodwin Tech girls volleyball squads dealt with adversity this past week.

The Indians suffered a 14-9 loss at home against Manchester on Thursday. It was an emotional loss for Newington against its former coach, Roy Roberts, who is now in charge at Manchester.

The Gladiators meanwhile had a strong start to the week with a pair of 3-0 victories over Prince Tech and Vinal Tech. But Goodwin Tech finished the week with a 3-0 loss against Capital Prep, putting a damper on the accomplishments earlier on.

But despite the on the field losses, both teams still had players who stood out and put together winning performances — Andrew Grenier for Newington and Idalis Lozada for Goodwin Tech — which helped make them the New Britain Herald’s Athletes of the Week.

Grenier is most known for his play at wide receiver on the Indians’ offense but he was also important in the running game Thursday. He led the team with 40 yards on the ground to go along with his contributions at receiver.

But where he made his biggest impact was on the defensive side of the ball.

Grenier applied pressure on Manchester quarterback Junior Vasquez all night, leading to bad decisions on his part. Grenier also had two sacks in the game.

His combination of play on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball has made him a very important player for Newington.

“Andrew is one of the most underlooked players on the team,” Eric Hennessy said. “I don’t think people fully understand what type of player he is.
